Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

2-Day Provider Training:

An Evidenced-Based Treatment for PTSD

JOIN US IN BEAUTIFUL CHARLESTON, SC!

Interested in learning a short term evidenced based treatment for PTSD?

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is one of the most researched treatments for PTSD and has been shown to be effective at reducing PTSD symptoms in a variety of populations including combat veterans, sexual assault victims, child abuse, natural disasters and refugees. CPT is listed in the SAMHSA National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices and has been shown to be effective in both individual and group therapy settings. In 2017, the Veterans Health Administration and Department of Defense (VA/DoD) and the American Psychological Association (APA) each published treatment guidelines for PTSD and both listed CPT as a front-line treatment for PTSD. CPT is a cognitive-behavioral therapy for PTSD and related conditions developed by Drs. Patricia Resick, Candice Monson and Kathleen Chard. CPT typically consists of 12, 50-minute therapy sessions.

The purpose of this training is to teach participants to conduct the cognitive processing therapy (CPT) protocols for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is a very heterogeneous disorder with high rates of comorbidity. The workshop begins with a description of DSM-5 symptoms followed by a functional description of why some people do not recover from trauma and why comorbid symptoms develop along with their PTSD. Cognitive and biological theories will be introduced to describe why cognitive therapy reduces PTSD symptoms.Following a review of research on CPT, the participants will learn to conduct the 12-session therapy, session by session along with a variable-length version of the protocol. CPT is a very systematic approach to treating PTSD in which participants learn to think about their traumatic events differently and learn the skill of more balanced thinking generally. This two-day training includes many videotaped examples of the therapy as well as opportunities to practice skills and work with the worksheets that are part of the therapy. Content level is intermediate.
